MET Issues Snowfall Prediction for Kashmir; Know When and Where Rain or Snow is Expected

Srinagar, Nov 3: The Meteorological Centre Srinagar has forecast a change in weather conditions across Jammu and Kashmir, predicting light rainfall and snowfall over higher reaches between November 4 and 5.

The department said that the next two days could bring a short spell of wet weather, followed by a significant dip in both day and night temperatures across most regions of the Union Territory.

According to Director MET, Dr. Mukhtar Ahmad, the weather will remain mostly dry till November 3, after which a western disturbance is expected to influence the region. “On November 4 and 5, the weather is likely to remain generally cloudy, with the possibility of light to moderate rain or snowfall at many places in the Kashmir division and at scattered places in the Jammu division,” Dr. Ahmad said.

He added that the activity would be more pronounced in higher altitudes and hilly areas, particularly during the evening of November 4 and early morning of November 5.

The department further stated that after this brief spell, the weather will turn dry again from November 6 to 15, bringing back stable and clear conditions across both divisions. However, officials have cautioned that a noticeable drop in temperatures is expected once the system passes, especially in the Valley and parts of Chenab and Pir Panjal regions. “There will be a marked decline in maximum and minimum temperatures from November 5 onwards,” the MET chief confirmed.

In its advisory, the Meteorological Department also warned of possible thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds—ranging between 30 to 40 kilometres per hour—at a few locations on the evening of November 4. People residing in higher altitudes have been advised to remain cautious during this period, particularly those engaged in travel or outdoor work.

The department has also issued specific guidance for farmers, urging them to temporarily suspend agricultural operations on November 4 due to the expected weather activity. The advisory emphasized that avoiding irrigation, pesticide application, or harvest-related work on that day would help prevent potential losses.

Overall, the brief wet spell is not expected to cause any major disruption, but it will mark the beginning of colder conditions across Kashmir as winter gradually sets in. Residents have been advised to prepare for a sharp fall in temperature from next week onward.
