Weather Alert: MeT Forecasts Rain and Thundershowers Across J&K

Srinagar, 9 May: The Meteorological Centre Srinagar has issued a fresh forecast indicating a change in weather patterns across Jammu and Kashmir. While the region is currently enjoying a dry spell, residents should prepare for rain, thundershowers, and a dip in temperatures starting early next week.

According to the MeT department, weather conditions are expected to remain generally dry on May 9 and throughout most of May 10. However, the atmosphere will likely turn unstable by Sunday evening, with brief showers expected in isolated locations during the night.

Three-Day Wet Spell Predicted

The most significant weather activity is scheduled to occur between May 11 and May 13. During this period, the MeT department expects the sky to remain generally cloudy across the Union Territory. Many places are likely to see one or two spells of light to moderate rain and thundershowers.

The department has also warned of localized weather hazards, including:

  • Hailstorms and Lightning: Expected at isolated places.
  • Gusty Winds: Winds reaching speeds of 40–50 kmph are anticipated in both Kashmir and Jammu divisions.

Advisory for Farmers

In light of the predicted weather deterioration, the MeT department has issued a specific advisory for the farming community. Farmers are urged to continue and complete their essential farm operations, such as spraying and harvesting, by the evening of May 10. Taking action before the rain begins will help minimize potential damage to crops.

Temperature Expected to Fall

Along with the rain, a noticeable change in the air is expected. The MeT department predicts that daytime temperatures will drop by 3°C to 5°C at many locations during the May 11–13 period, bringing a temporary end to the recent warmth.

Extended Outlook

Looking further ahead, the weather is expected to remain partly to generally cloudy from May 14 to May 16. However, the stability may be brief, as the MeT predicts light rain and thundershowers could return to scattered areas again on May 17 and 18.
