Heavy Snowfall Alert Issued for Kashmir During Chillai Kalan

Srinagar, December 18, 2025: The prolonged dry spell in Jammu and Kashmir is likely to end as a strong Western Disturbance is set to affect the region, bringing widespread snowfall, particularly to the higher reaches.

Weather officials have issued a snow alert as the system coincides with the beginning of Chillai Kalan, the coldest 40 day period of winter in Kashmir.

Meteorological sources said the intensity of the weather system has increased over the last 24 hours, raising the chances of moderate to heavy snowfall in several areas from December 20 to December 22. The snowfall is expected to peak on December 21.

Popular tourist destinations and higher altitude areas such as Gulmarg, Sonamarg, Pahalgam and Doodhpathri are likely to receive significant snow accumulation. Officials said snowfall in upper reaches could range from six inches to nearly three feet at isolated locations.

The expected snowfall is being seen as a major relief after an unusually dry November and early December. The dry conditions had resulted in falling water levels in rivers and streams, along with an increase in respiratory problems among residents due to dry and cold air.

Authorities have also issued a travel and safety advisory, warning of possible disruptions. High altitude passes including Zojila, Razdan Top and Sinthan Top are likely to remain closed during the snowfall period.

Commuters and transporters have been advised to remain cautious on the Srinagar-Jammu National Highway, especially during the night of December 20 and the morning of December 21 due to slippery road conditions.

Weather experts said that while cloud cover may prevent an immediate sharp drop in night temperatures, a severe cold wave is expected once the snowfall ends, intensifying winter conditions across the Valley.

The Meteorological Centre Srinagar is expected to issue a detailed forecast and fresh advisories in the coming days
