Sakina Itoo Announces Summer Vacations for Schools
Srinagar, May 23: The Jammu and Kashmir government on Saturday officially announced summer vacations for schools falling under the Summer Zone of Jammu Division in view of the prevailing weather conditions and rising temperatures across the region.
Education Minister Sakina Itoo said the decision has been taken as temperatures continue to rise in many districts of Jammu, with students facing difficulties due to the intense heat during school hours.
According to the Minister, students of Primary Classes will begin their summer vacations from June 1, 2026, while students studying in Classes 6th to 12th will observe vacations from June 8, 2026.
“Keeping in view the prevailing weather conditions, summer vacations for schools falling under the Summer Zone of Jammu Division shall commence from June 1 for Primary Classes. Vacations for students of Classes 6th to 12th will commence from June 8,” Sakina Itoo said.
The announcement comes amid increasing temperatures in the Jammu region over the past several days, with many areas witnessing hot and uncomfortable daytime conditions. Parents and students had also been demanding early vacations due to the heatwave-like situation in some districts.
Officials said the phased schedule has been designed to provide immediate relief to younger children, who are considered more vulnerable to extreme weather conditions, while ensuring academic activities for higher classes continue for a few more days before the full vacation period begins.
The decision applies specifically to schools located in the Summer Zone areas of Jammu Division. Schools in Kashmir division and winter zone areas will continue functioning as per their existing academic calendar unless separate orders are issued.
The School Education Department is expected to issue a detailed official order regarding the duration of vacations, reopening dates, and implementation guidelines in the coming days.
The announcement has brought relief to thousands of students and parents across Jammu, especially as temperatures are expected to remain above normal in the coming weeks.
