J&K Residents Can Submit Census Details Online from May 17

Srinagar: Residents of Jammu and Kashmir will soon be able to submit their household details online as part of the upcoming Census 2027, with the digital window set to open from May 17 to May 31.

Officials said the online self-enumeration facility has been introduced to make the process easier and more accurate. By filling in details online, residents can ensure their information is recorded correctly before field staff visit their homes.

A senior official from the Census Department said that this step is aimed at improving efficiency and reducing errors in data collection. However, even after online submission, enumerators will visit every household to verify the information and assist those who could not use the digital platform.

Two Phases of Census

The Census will be conducted in two stages across Jammu and Kashmir. The first phase, known as houselisting, will take place from June 1 to June 30, during which details of households and living conditions will be collected.

The second phase, which focuses on population enumeration, will be conducted separately based on regional conditions. In snow-bound areas, the process will take place in September 2026, while in non-snow areas, it is scheduled for February 2027.

Why This Census Is Important

The Census 2027 holds significant importance as it will provide the official population data for the Union Territory. This data will play a key role in future planning, development policies, and allocation of resources.
Importantly, the Census will also form the basis for delimitation, which determines electoral boundaries. In addition, it is expected to provide detailed data related to reserved categories, which could influence ongoing discussions around reservation policies.

Push Towards Digital System
Authorities are focusing on a digital and paperless approach for this Census. The online system is expected to speed up the process and improve data accuracy.

Residents have been advised to provide correct and complete information, as the Census data will impact governance, welfare schemes, and representation for the coming years.
